What type of magnesium is used in Natural Calm?
The final product when consumed is magnesium citrate. It is created with a proprietary blend of magnesium carbonate and citric acid. Once added to water, a chemical reaction binds the two together and creates ionic magnesium citrate.
What does “ionic magnesium citrate” mean?
Ionic means that the molecules have gained or lost an electron and seek to attach to something to balance out the electron count. Our product is ionic – magnesium carbonate binds to citric acid. Research has shown that ionic minerals are more easily absorbed by the body.
The directions say that you can prepare Calm with 2-3 oz. of hot water or simply add Natural Calm to a glass or bottle of cold water. What is the difference?
The powder form of Natural Calm is magnesium carbonate and citric acid. Adding water triggers a chemical reaction, binding the two together to create magnesium citrate. If you add hot water, this reaction will occur immediately and you will know the product is fully converted into magnesium citrate when the fizzing has settled. If you add cold water, the reaction can take up to 15 minutes before it is fully converted. Neither method yields more or less of a benefit; it is mainly a matter of how promptly you’d like to consume Natural Calm after preparing it.
When should I take Natural Calm?
It really varies from person to person. According to Dr. Carolyn Dean, author of “The Magnesium Miracle”, “it is recommended to take magnesium supplements between meals for optimal absorption. Magnesium needs stomach acid to be absorbed. After a full meal your stomach acid is busy digesting food and may not be available to help absorb the magnesium, where if you take it with food it may neutralize stomach acid and impair digestion.”
If you are wondering whether you should take Natural Calm in the morning or at night, it depends on what you are hoping to get from the product. Some people may feel sleepy after drinking Calm due to its naturally relaxing effect and thus prefer to take it at night, whereas others may prefer to take it in the morning to ease feelings of anxiety, help combat a headache or simply start the day calmfully.
What does it mean/what should I do if diarrhea occurs?
The laxative effect of magnesium is your guide to how much to take. Anything above the amount needed by the body will be eliminated through the bowels, kidneys or through sweat.
There is nothing wrong and, as many people experience constipation, regularity can be a welcome benefit.
If you experience an uncomfortable laxative effect, simply decrease your dosage or space it out over time (break the dose into 2-3 smaller doses). At the optimal dosage, your stools should be comfortably loose.
It may be necessary to take a higher dose of Natural Calm at first to make up for any magnesium deficiency that might be present. If you have been taking a certain dose since you started taking the supplement and you start to experience diarrhea, it could mean that you have made up for the deficiency and that your body is ready to adjust to a lower dose.
The body’s requirements for magnesium are not static. This is an advantage to Natural Calm’s powder form which makes it easy to increase or decrease the amount you take. During times of stress (mental, emotional or physical) more magnesium is often needed. Additionally, caffeine, alcohol, sweating and some prescription drugs can deplete magnesium at a cellular level and the body may need more in order to maintain a healthy balance.
Is Natural Calm a laxative?
This is not the intended purpose of Natural Calm. The laxative effect of magnesium is your guide to how much to take. Anything above the amount needed by the body will be eliminated through the bowels, kidneys or through sweat. According to the National Institute of Health, the recommended daily allowance for Magnesium is between 310 and 320 milligrams for adults of average weight (or approximately 2.2mg per lb. of body weight), thus Natural Calm taken as directed should not have a laxative effect. Bodies differ and “one size” does not necessarily fit all. If a recommended dose on the bottle label is causing loose stools or diarrhea, simply cut down the dose or break it up into 2-3 doses through the day.
Can I take Natural Calm after its expiration date?
We do not advise consuming or selling the product beyond its expiration date. While the magnesium is a mineral and does not degrade, there are food-based ingredients in the product (citric acid, and flavoring agents) that have the potential to spoil beyond the expiration date.
What is the source of the citric acid used in Natural Calm?
The citric acid is derived from verified non-GMO sugar beets sourced from Belgium.
Does Natural Calm contain corn or any of its derivatives?
The unflavored version of our Natural Calm does not contain any corn or derivatives of corn. The flavoring used in the other varieties (Raspberry Lemon, Sweet Lemon, Orange, and Cherry) does have a sub-ingredient that is derived from corn (organic maltodextrin); however, there are no corn proteins in the product and all flavors of Natural Calm have been verified as non-GMO by the Non-GMO Project.
What does Natural Calm help with?
Because magnesium is a vital, multi-purposed mineral involved in an estimated 700+ emzymatic reactions in the body, Natural Calm is used for a variety of reasons including stress relief, bone health support, heart health support and support of energy storage and transportation systems. The main purpose of this product is to restore deficient magnesium levels in those experiencing symptoms of deficiency (thus alleviating or lessening these symptoms), and to maintain healthy magnesium levels.
What are the symptoms of magnesium deficiency?

Can I put Natural Calm in something besides water?
Yes. We recommend you first activate the product in 2-3 oz. of hot water. Once the fizzing has stopped and the blend has settled, you can add it to a juice, smoothie, or herbal tea. You can also add to cold water (water bottle or iced drink). In cold drinks Natural Calm will take longer to dissolve but, once dissolved, it functions the same as in warm or tea beverages.
Are there any contraindications with Natural Calm and prescription medications?
A medically-trained professional may advise you to not use Natural Calm while taking certain prescription medications. Please defer to the advice of your physician or pharmacist prior to beginning magnesium supplementation if you are taking any prescription medications.
Is it safe to give a child Natural Calm?
Yes. The National Institute of Health has established recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) of magnesium for all ages beginning with infancy. Please refer to their website (http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Magnesium-HealthProfessional/#h2) or call our Customer Service line for the current magnesium RDAs by age. Natural Calm is recommended by Mommy MD Guides and is a Parent Tested Parent Approved award winner.
Can you take Natural Calm while pregnant or nursing?
We suggest that you speak to your doctor regarding supplementation when pregnant or nursing. Many researchers, doctors, and health professionals recognize the benefit of magnesium during pregnancy and lactation. The RDAs set forth by the National Institute of Health and the Office of Dietary Supplements for magnesium have specifically included an amount for pregnant and lactating women thus highlighting the need for this mineral during that stage of life.
How does Natural Calm affect blood pressure?
If you are taking any blood pressure medication, please consult with a medically trained professional before using Natural Calm because magnesium can naturally lower blood pressure.
Does Natural Calm contain heavy metals?
Every batch of our products are tested by a third party laboratories to ensure levels of metals meet our safety specifications. Nearly every product has trace amounts of heavy metals in it due to the fact of being produced in the organic world. Any heavy metals in all Natural Vitality products are well below both FDA and California Prop 65’s standards.
Should you refrigerate Natural Calm after opening?
No. We recommend the product be stored in a cool dry place.
Can I prepare Natural Calm in advance and not drink it until later?
Yes. Many customers do prepare Natural Calm in advance and drink it throughout the day. If you do not plan to consume it within 48 hours, we recommend refrigerating it (since there are food-based ingredients in the Calm).
Why isn’t my bottle of Natural Calm full?
When the powder is bottled, it is extremely fluffy from the mixing that occurs in the production process. Due to this fluffiness, the bottles start out extremely full; so full in fact that a giant auger has to press the product down in order to apply a cap. Over time, the product settles and may appear to be less, although the net weight has not changed.
